EP Review: Le Big Zero - At Arm's Length

Brooklyn-based DIY indie band Le Big Zero released their latest EP ‘At Arms Length‘ last week. It’s an EP which doesn’t sit still that blends garage-rock with noisier, jazzier art-rock moments and well-placed harmonies that work oh so well. EP opener ‘Watch It Burn‘ kicks things off with a bang and sets the pace for the EP with heavy, hypnotic guitar parts and shouty vocals. ‘Heavy Handed‘ follows this up in a similar manner, but it’s more intense with hectic, interlocking melodies.

Three tracks in we get to the EP’s lead single ‘Toy‘, a track centred around complex, almost-bluesy guitar melodies. The track starts off minimally and in a monotonous manner, but once everything builds up and the vocals come in, the the riffs show their true colourful side. ‘Toy’ shouldn’t be taken on face value as it develops into a something heavier with beautiful guitar melodies towards the end.

Nice To Meet You‘ is more of an in-your-face, indie-rock track in comparison. It has punkier tendencies and it’s definitely one of the EP’s most energetic moments. It’s noisy, intense and it sounds like a track that should be jumped around to live.

Second to last track ‘Pay No Mind‘ has post-punk traits and has the jauntiest, most eccentric riffs on the EP. Then ‘Spin Cycle‘ starts off humbly with drone-y synths and commanding bass parts, it’s a slow-burner that’s worth sticking around for anyway. It turns into something epic with chugging guitars and soaring riffs, it’s an intense moment and a truly brilliant EP closer.
