Track of the Day #837: The New America – Hong Kong Free Press

The New America - Hong Kong Free PressYesterday Bristol based noise-rock band The New America released their latest single ‘Hong Kong Free Press‘! It’s the band’s catchiest, poignant offering and yet it’s still as, if not more frenzied than previous single ‘Going to the Races (Dressed Like a Racist)‘. ‘Hong Kong Free Press’ definitely doesn’t sound like The Killers either!

Speaking of the track, the band have said: “It’s a rare thing to be presented with a clear example of right vs wrong. If there is one stand out example in our troubled times, it is the crackdown on Hong Kong. ‘Hong Kong Free Press’ is a call to recognise those who are fighting the good fight and to acknowledge our own failures to do the same.”

“When the song was written in the summer of 2019, everyone was watching the one million people demonstrating on behalf of democracy. Since then we’ve turned our heads to our own problems, finding out the threat was much closer to home. If nothing else, ‘Hong Kong Free Press’ reminds us to always keep our eyes and ears open and to act decisively when we can.”
