18 Bands That Shouldn’t Have Been Missed at Icebreaker Festival over the past 5 years! – Part 1

Around now we’d normally be posting our second part of our ‘You Can’t Miss’ preview blog posts in the run up to Icebreaker Festival in Portsmouth… Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the festival isn’t happening this winter but it’d normally be happening around a week or two from now.

However, I felt a bit lost so I have come up with a list of bands that we’ve seen at Icebreaker Festival over the past 5 years that you shouldn’t be missing out on. Some of these bands/artists we saw for the first time at the festival as well! It’s not quite the same, but it’s something and hopefully we’ll be able to catch all of these bands again at some point in the future!

Hallan

In brief: One of Portsmouth’s most exciting bands at the moment! Post-punk quartet Hallan packed out The Fat Fox at last year’s Icebreaker Festival and the band have just announced that they’re releasing their brand new single ‘Hands Up’ will be out on 5th February!

Megan Linford

In brief: Megan Linford is a Southsea based folk-roots artist who creates music with a mixture of influences from folk, Americana and gospel/soul. I think Megan Linford is actually one of the only artists we saw at our first Icebreaker Festival that we’re still listening to today!

Fugitive Orchestra

In brief: Fugitive Orchestra is a Portsmouth based musician who creates a unique blend of jazz-infused blues, pop, hip-hop that is combined with beat-boxing and live-looping The same as with Megan Linford, Fugitive Orchestra was also one of our first finds at our first Icebreaker Festival 5 years ago!

Sad Palace

In brief: One of our longstanding favourite local bands! Gosport based Sad Palace create “supernatural groove rock”. The band have played Icebreaker various times over the last few years, but they packed out the Wine Vaults for their headline set at the festival last year.

Askies

In brief: Askies are one of, if not the only band not from the South/South East that we’ve seen live at Icebreaker Festival over the last couple of years. We saw the band perform last year at the Wedgewood Rooms stage and they blew us away. The band create razor-sharp alternative, indie-rock and their latest track ‘Forty-Three’ is huge.

Arcade Hearts

In brief: Arcade Hearts are a Gosport based, 80’s influenced, alternative pop band, another one of our early favourites. We last saw the band at Icebreaker when they headlined the One Eyed Dog back in 2018! If I remember rightly, that was the first and last time Dan went crowdsurfing, I think?

Me and the Moon

In brief: Portsmouth based Me and the Moon are a duo who create charming, folk-tinged indie pop. I think the first time we saw Me and the Moon was in fact at Icebreaker Festival 2017!

Fake Empire

In brief: Fake Empire are a Portsmouth based post-punk trio who make dark, yet epic tracks with a melancholic edge. We last caught Fake Empire at Icebreaker Festival 2019 after being super impressed by them at Dials Festival 2018.

Bel Esprit

In brief: Southampton based Bel Esprit actually appeared on our first ever Icebreaker Festival preview back in 2016! The band create anthemic indie-rock, but although I’m not too sure if Bel Esprit are still about, but ‘Lost My Mind’ and ‘Red Weather’ were huge tunes!
