South Specific – A Celebration of the Portsmouth Music Scene from 1980 to 2020
40 years after its original release, Brain Booster Music recently resurrected South Specific 1980, a long-lost local compilation CD featuring Portsmouth DIY, post-punk bands.
In 1980, a collective of Portsmouth based post-punk bands had big dreams for the city and taking inspiration from the music scenes of the likes of Manchester as well as Liverpool, they released a self-financed, 8 band/21 track compilation album.
South Specific 2020 combines a range of bands/artists across all corners of the local music scene from electronica to post-punk, garage rock to left-field pop, lo-fi rap and avant-garde.
This latest release includes the original but remastered ‘South Specific 1980’ CD featuring unreleased tracks from around 1980 and is joined by two additional disks featuring tracks (as well as exclusives/songs recorded during lockdown) from other, more modern bands from the Portsmouth Music Scene.
The original release ‘South Specific 1980’ even received acclaim from by John Peel and received international radio play.
This three CD release features 61 bands including ATTIC, Race Car Hearts, Renaldo & The Loaf, The Frames and more, plus a 20-page booklet in which you can find out more about all the participating bands.
All profits from this release will be donated to Portsmouth mental health charity Tonic.
