Dan Lyons was one of the last artists we were lucky to see before lockdown when he supported Strange Cages at The Festing in Portsmouth back in March, just before the release of his debut solo album ‘SubSuburbia’. Taken from said album, ‘Mr. Meaner‘ is a well thought-out track that’s very easy on the ear and the mostly spoken-word style vocals compliment the track perfectly.
Speaking of the lyrics, Dan Lyons has said: “‘Mr. Meaner’ lives in SubSuburbia, he has a drinking problem and anger issues. He takes his repressed emotions, turns them into violence and hurts the ones he loves. The song switches perspective all the time, from the abuser to the abused and then to the hapless voyeur, trying to offer some kind of support, but failing. On the surface, the song is about an abusive, fictional marriage, but I think everybody has had an experience with this kind of relationship”.
