Let’s Take Five: An interview with The Collision!
The Collision are one of the most exciting, upcoming local bands of the moment and regardless of whether you’re into pop, rock or anything else in between, their live performance is so infectious you’ll only want more. Last week the band released their latest single ‘Ghosts‘, a catchy, powerful track with a heartfelt side to it and an epic chorus.
Having just performed an outstanding set at Wedgewood Rooms for Icebreaker Festival two weeks ago and with the release of the single, we decided it was a good time to catch up with the band about new music, playing live and the future!
Hi there! Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce The Collision:
Hello! We are The Collision and we are an anthemic pop, rock band from Portsmouth, UK. We started off when some of us were 14 playing the little pubs and clubs of the local area but we like to think we’ve recently found our sound and are an energetic live band.
Your latest single ‘Ghosts’ was released last week and it’s great! If you could sum the single up in three words, what would they be and why?
Thank you! Oh god ummm, ‘big ole chorus’? ‘Mental health awareness’? I’m not sure! We just tried to write a song that really kind of reflected where we are at as a band as humans I think. We were experiencing things with a person outside the band at the time where we witnessed their mental health really deteriorate which had a negative effect on their outlook and relationships with people. This absolutely killed us to witness – so me and Lewis (the singer) wrote more or less all of ‘Ghosts’ in one sitting around a piano, it kind of just fell out of us really.
We are all so proud of it and we 100% believe that it is our strongest release to date, and people have really seem to have taken to it which feels absolutely amazing considering how close we are to it, with the subject matter and all.
We saw you live for the third time at Icebreaker Festival last week and were super impressed! Where do you get your energy?
Lots of sugar I guess! We’ve just always lost it a bit onstage and we’re not really sure where it came from – I think when we all first started Lewis had a lot of experience singing in pubs and his enthusiasm to get the crowd going kinda just made us all go a bit crazy I suppose. I absolutely love it though, I’m not sure we could do a gig standing still!
You toured a lot towards the end of last year with gigs up and down the country including gigs as far away as Torquay, Cardiff, Liverpool, Leeds and more! What’s the weirdest gig/tour story you have to share?
Our tour was virtually indebted to AirBnB! When we played up North we decided to have one place that we stayed in for the whole run of dates up there – we booked this little one room bunkhouse that smelt a bit and didn’t really look like anyone had cleaned it for quite some time. It was dead in the middle of this abandoned looking plant nursery thing and it actually looked like a scene from a horror movie. I actually thought we were going to get murdered! I think a stranger nearly came in through the bathroom bit (which was completely open for anyone to just wander through) at one point at 4am and I genuinely believed it was Jason (Friday 13th)! I probably screamed.
Either that or some drunk stranger absolutely hoofing up all over Tom’s entire bass rig in Swansea!
Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming gigs and what have you got planned for the rest of 2019?
Oh man! We’re currently working on our new EP that ‘Ghosts’ will feature on and we’re also halfway through booking another tour for May time. We’re so looking forward to it because playing live is our favourite thing to do and we’ve got some material that we just cannot wait for people to hear. It’s sooo different from the first EP and I couldn’t be more proud of what we got so far.
We’d like to thank The Collision very much for their time! You can check out their latest single ‘Ghosts’ below and also find them on social media via the following links.
