Just after the release of their latest single ‘Tell Her How You Feel’, we spoke to up and coming Birmingham based band The Assist. The four-piece (who formed in 2014) have supported some rather big names, while having also played the likes of Y NOT? and Leeds festival. The band have also been named as “Birmingham’s next big thing” by BBC Introducing.
We caught up with the band to discuss their latest single, Britpop, The Stone Roses and the future!
Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce your
Hey! We are The Assist who grace the ever so lovely streets of Birmingham. Our sound is best described as indie/funk, with sharp guitar tones, slap bass and punchy drums which are layered with an aggressive rap-like vocal.
Your latest single ‘Tell Her How You Feel’ has just been released! If you had to sum up the track in just three words, what would they be and why?
Funky, sexy and magic are the three words I’d used to describe ‘Tell Her How You Feel’. Purely because we certainly let the majority of our funk out when performing this tune live. We like to think that has a positive effect on the audience too!
What originally sparked your interest in making music?
The Britpop era influenced us massively when discovering that it was music we wanted to make. We were also influenced very much so by that rock and roll behaviour which came with being in a band too. We are however incredibly well behaved these days and let the music do the talking! We of course have ambitions of touring the world one day also.
You’ve supported some quite big names such as Blossoms, Jaws and Rat Boy. But if you could tour alongside one famous band/musician dead or alive, who would it be?
Those support slots were so wicked! Anyone? It would have to be the stone roses of course! I’m sure they can still party with an injection of youth on tour.
Finally, have you got anything to share regarding what you’ve got planned for 2017 and the remainder of 2016?
2017 is going to be scary! For the remainder of 2016 were going to take some time off and continue to write some funky tunes for y’all!
We thank The Assist for their time in answering our questions! You can listen to their latest track ‘Tell Her How You Feel’ below via Youtube and purchase the track digitally here. You can also follow the band over at both Facebook and Twitter!
