Let's Take Five: An interview with Wharves
Australian band Wharves were our track of the day last week with their latest single ‘It’s You’ and we were so impressed with their music that we decided to catch up with them to discuss the single, first gigs and the future!
Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce your band
Hey there! We are Matt, Mike, Scott and Fraser from the Australian dance rock band WHARVES. We are currently based in Byron Bay, a small surf town on the East Coast.
Your latest single, ‘It’s You’ was released just a few weeks ago. How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never listened to you before?
Our sound is a mixture of classic Australian rock blended with more modern dance and indie elements. Some people have compared ‘It’s You’ to Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and Beck. We love to have fun with our music and hope that the same effect is reached by listening.
Is there a full-length album in the works and if so, how is it coming along?
Unfortunately, there is no album on the way yet, but the good news is that we are about to head back in the studio to do a couple more singles with Steven Schram who produced ‘It’s You’. We are really excited to put some more stuff out there especially after working out what works and what doesn’t with the tour.
From the looks of your social media, you’re a very busy band regarding gigging in Australia. What has been the strangest gig you’ve ever played as a band and why?
The strangest one was probably the first gig we played together which was at a fete in our home town. We were playing in front of a skate park to a bunch of families and half way through our set some serious looking rain clouds come over head. We were pretty determined to make it through the set but of course the rain started pouring down upon on all of our gear. We soldiered on through the last song and then Mike had a sudden realisation that it was probably in our best interests to stop playing because all our gear is run with electricity… Science isn’t our strong point, but one thing that stuck is that water + electricity = death. A town fete isn’t probably worth getting electrocuted and dying for.
Finally, have you got anything to share regarding what you’ve got planned for the remainder of 2016 and the new year?
For the end of the year, we’ve got a couple of gigs that we are really excited about, especially a home town show with another rad Australian band called ‘Polish Club’ – check them out!
Next year we are going to bring out a few more tunes and probably an EP by the end, with a few tours thrown in for good measure, the dream is to make it overseas and hopefully meet all you guys over there!
Many thanks to Wharves for their time! You can find the band on both Facebook and Twitter, plus you can listen to their latest single ‘It’s You’ below via Soundcloud and also purchase the track digitally here!
