Back in March we saw up and coming band Among The Citizens support Costellos at the Edge of the Wedge, Portsmouth and were really impressed by them. Fast forward a few months and the band released their latest single ‘In Your Car’, definitely one of our favourite releases from last month! We decided to catch up with Among The Citizens to talk about the track, gigging and the future!
Hi there! Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce Among The Citizens:
Hi! We are John, Christy, Ollie and James and we make up Among The Citizens! We are all from around the Peterborough area and met at secondary school through our love of the same music. We always ask ourselves the question of what genre we actually are; but if we had to choose it would have to be a cross of indie/alternative music.
You’ve just released your latest single ‘In Your Car’ and we love it! If you could sum the track up in three words, what would they be and why?
Thank you so much! Its hard to narrow it down to three but we’d have to describe it as moody, funky and head-banging (if that can be one word). When we set about writing ‘In Your Car’ we wanted to create something quite moody that people could jump around to but also something that people could just have a dance to and funk out a bit too.
We caught you live back in March supporting Costellos in Portsmouth and thought you were great. Since then you’ve been gigging near enough non-stop, but for anyone who hasn’t seen Among The Citizens live yet, how would you describe one of your gigs?
Yeah, we’ve been very lucky to be able to gig up and down the country; our gigs tend be very very sweaty on and off stage and people always seem to really get into it with their moves and singing the words back to us which is the best feeling in the world. It’s crazy going to places we’ve never been before and people coming out and watching us.
Do you have any strange/weird gigging stories to share?
At our home town show in Stamford, just when a pit was about to jump in, someone we know did a splits directly in the middle and everyone loved it. It made our night.
Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming gigs and what have you got planned for the remainder of 2019/the beginning of 2020?
Yeah we’ve got a few more gigs before the end of the year which people can catch us at. We’ve got a headline show on the 2nd of November in Cambridge at the Portland Arms which we’re buzzing for! We’re playing at the Norwich Arts Centre supporting Larkins on the 11th of November and finally we’re back in London at Colours Hoxton supporting No Hot Ashes on the 18th of November.
We’d like to thank Among The Citizens very much for their time! You can catch them live at the dates above including their Portland Arms, Cambridge gig tomorrow evening and you can find them on social media via the links below.
