London via Glasgow based trio Crooked Teeth recently returned with their latest single ‘Mountain Song’ and the promise of a huge 2018 for the band. As good time as ever to catch up with the band, we had a brief chat with Crooked Teeth regarding their latest single, writing music, their forthcoming single and the future!
Hi there! Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce Crooked Teeth:
Hello Mix It All Up! We’re Jo, Sam and Rob from East London and we create noise-pop sounds. We’ve been writing songs for over three years, but we’ve recently signed to Lost In The Manor Records to release our music and share what we’ve been working intensely on since forming as a band.
We’d say we all have eclectic tastes in music to one another but that works for us in writing our songs collectively. We love analogue synths and treated guitar sounds, and we’re definitely fans of the classic nuances of pop song writing techniques.
We’re enjoying your latest single ‘Mountain Song’! But where did the inspiration for the track come from?
We wouldn’t categorise or shelve ‘Mountain Song’ within one particular event or theme. It’s a contrasting song so afflicts itself with a number of contexts socially. We try and write songs that are accessible to all our listeners and encourage a process of adopting what the music means to them individually. It’s what we do ourselves and find that ambiguity pretty magical.
What originally sparked your interest to start creating music as a band?
We have a strong friendship and wanted to experiment pulling our musical resources and talents together. As we live close to each other it’s almost like we have our own thing and hopefully that shines through in our music. Rob and Jo met initially within the Glasgow music scene and became friends with Sam when they moved down to London around six years ago.
If you could work with any band or artist on a new song, who would it be and why?
We write and record all our music together so it’s been quite an insular process but that’s worked for us so far. We all have our opinions on whom we’d love to work with the most but last year Anna Meredith headlined the stage we played at for the Are You Listening? Festival in Reading. We’re huge fans and would love for her to remix one of our songs, although we’re not big enough for that yet probably! Maybe the shared Glasgow and London influence would help…
Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming gigs and what have you got planned for the rest of 2018?
Yes, we think so! We’ll be releasing our second single on Lost In The Manor Records in a fortnight or so called ‘The American Dream’. We’re really proud of it and was one of the first songs we wrote together in 2015 so looking forward to sharing that with you. We’re also playing The Great Escape in Brighton next month and we can’t wait for that.
We’d like to thank Crooked Teeth very much for their time! You can listen to their latest track ‘Mountain Song’ below and you can catch them live at The Great Escape mid next month.
