Let’s Take Five: An interview with Palma Louca!

Following the release of their debut single ‘Disparity‘ back in January, we’ve been awaiting the return of North East based rock band Palma Louca who impressed us on one track alone. In the meantime and with more new music on the way, we spoke to the band regarding their debut single, playing live and the future!

Hi there! Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce Palma Louca:

We’re a Newcastle based five piece band, we’re not all actually from Newcastle but we’re all from around the North East of England, ranging from Middleborough to Morpeth. We wouldn’t say we fit perfectly into any specific genre but ambient, alt-rock would probably be the closest. We take influence from a lot of bands and artists, but we’d say our main ones are Peace, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Pixies and Foals. We’ve been together for about a year now and performing in venues across the North East for the past 10 months.

Your latest and debut single ‘Disparity’ was released back in January and we loved it. If you could sum the track up in three words, what would they be and why?

Thank you, the idea with disparity was to catch the listeners attention with something slightly different, whilst also showing the range of our sound as a band. In three words we would say powerful, vibrant and unique.

Where did the original spark that encouraged you to start creating music as a band come from?

Me (Richard) and my brother (Joe) have been writing songs together since about 2014. Once I started uni and moved up to Newcastle we wanted to form a band, mostly just for fun but also to get our songs out there.

I met two mates in uni (Dan and Andrew) who where also interested in the idea. Shortly after, the four of us were having a jam in Joe’s flat when someone knocked on the door, we thought it was someone complaining about the noise but a guy in a pink check dressing gown answered asking if we wanted a drummer. A few weeks later we got together and started rehearsing!

Is there anywhere that you’d love to play live, but haven’t yet?

Since we’ve only played locally in the North East at the minute, we’d love to play some other huge music cities as well as Newcastle, such as London, Manchester and Liverpool. Hopefully this will be happening in 2018 and we can’t wait. Eventually if we got the opportunity to play in different countries, we’d love that to.

Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming gigs and what have you got planned for 2018?

We’ve got a lot happening in 2018. A new single is planned for release within the next 4 to 6 weeks, and then an EP release aimed for the October time. We’ve got gigs constantly around the North East but also plan to expand and play in lots of cities and venues across the UK this year as well as many festivals as we can over the summer. So keep an eye out.

We’d like to thank Palma Louca very much for their time! Listen to their latest single ‘Disparity’ below and also give them a follow on social media via the following links.
