Track of the day #332: Monograms – Sleep Cycle

Starting off as the solo project of Brooklyn based musician Ian Jacobs around 2 years ago, Monograms have explored various sounds and lineups before arriving at ‘Sleep Cycle‘, their dark, yet dreamy latest single. Now a four-piece band they’re at their most natural sounding yet. ‘Sleep Cycle’ is the sound of a band who have created their own niche version of angsty, urgent post-punk/dream pop all in one go. It’s heavy where it needs to be and yet calms down a bit for the choruses becoming a bit more laid back. Only briefly though before returning to its brashness and monotony. When you think it’s over, it comes back with a charming jangle-pop breakdown dividing the track in two. It’s effortlessly cool throughout.
