With them all being lifelong musicians with world tours, top 40 singles and a wealth of musical experience between them, Norwich based, The Magic Es are a force not to be reckoned with. Alongside previous singles ‘Colour Up My World’, ‘Melody Jane’ and most recently ‘Running Scared‘, the band have gained a favourable reputation amongst BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and BBC Norfolk among others.
The Magic Es have their debut album coming out at the end of next month and we decided that this was the perfect time to catch up with The Magic Es. We spoke to the band about the album release, the past and what is in store for the band in the future!
Firstly, so that our readers can know a bit more about you, please introduce The Magic Es!
We’re based in Norwich and have been going for about 3 years. We’ve been compared to bands like The Who, Teenage Fanclub, The Undertones and The Jam; it’s melodic rock ‘n’ roll with a very British feel. We’re a four piece; Pete (vocals/lead guitar), Stuart (drums), Jasper (bass) and Phil (rhythm guitar). We’ve all been playing in bands for years and bring a lot of different influences and experiences to the table
You’ve had a rather busy few years, but going back to the beginning, how did the band come together and what sparked the initial want to make music together?
Pete, Stuart and Phil played in a band a few years ago and one of our gigs was at a friend’s wedding; the wedding party happened to be at Jaspers house. We all got talking about music, what we’d done in the past; Jasper was the bass player in Then Jerico so had a number of stories about world tours, top 10 songs and the wider music industry. We all clicked and then a year or so later when Pete wanted to put together a new band it was just a natural step for it to involve Stuart, Phil and Jasper. Pete had a mountain of songs already so there wasn’t a problem when it came to having material!
As well as your latest single ‘Running Scared’ having just been released, your debut album ‘It Goes On’ is going to be out on 28th April! If you could sum up the album in just three words though, what would they be?
Big rock sounds!
If you could tour alongside any band or musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
We talk about this a lot; Paul Weller would be a great one to play with – he’s written some fantastic songs so to witness that up close would be very special. If we could pick a band that aren’t around anymore then it would have to be, for Pete anyway, The Small Faces; such a great band with a fine body of work… Who wouldn’t want to hear ‘All Or Nothing’ in its full live glory?
Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming tour dates and what have you got planned for the rest of 2017 once the album is released?
We have a four date UK tour starting on 13th April in promotion of the album; we’re mainly taking in ‘the north’; Halifax, Doncaster, Bradford and Manchester. We’ve got a couple of big shows in our hometown as well as festival dates; it’s going to be a busy year. All the dates can be found on our website.
We thank The Magic Es very much for their time! You can find the band on both Facebook and Twitter as well as being able to hear their latest track ‘Running Scared‘ taken from their upcoming album ‘It Goes On‘ below!
